Sorry if it's well known, but studying my favorite writer (Tolstoï... who else ?!) I've just discovered a moving photo collection in color took a century back by Sergueï Prokoudine-Gorski (he took one of Tolstoï, cf. Wikipedia).
The collection : http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/08/russia_in_color_a_century_ago.html

@astraban Thank you for posting - these are amazing!!
Truly amazing photographs; many with great detail and, of course, colour! It's hard to imagine that they survived so long and remain in such good condition for so long. Very moving. Thanks so much.
Wow! Amazing. thanks.

Best of this type I've seen. Thanks.
I think we have topic about it, as I remember.
No matter how many times I see these photos I'm always in awe. So amazing.
Stunning.
And isn't this the miracle of photography?
It stops time.
Traditionally, color photography was not accepted as "Fine Art."
Too transitory.
Color emulsions would not last.
Eventually, of course, the Fine Art purists sold out, and even Type C--what's that?--prints were acceptable.
This process, though, is very close to the dye transfer process.
And dyes, of course, last.
And emulsion does not.
