If you’re in the market for an extremely sharp Micro Four Thirds lens of some sort, then you already found the right lens. Panasonic’s 42.5mm f1.2 lens is–dare we say it–the sharpest lens for the system that we’ve ever tested. Panasonic put a lot of work into it, and you’re surely paying for it. Not only is this lens very sharp, but it focuses quickly, can have some very beautiful bokeh, great color rendition when working with skin tones and overall can present a great look for your subject.

Nocticron is a great lens. It may be expensive and big, but it also has lots of quality, both physically and in images. It is easy to use because it has no vices, no nasty surprises. You do not need tricks to lure this quality out, it just pops out all the time.

I had a chance to spend a couple of days with the Panasonic 42.5mm f1.2 and my GH4 Here are some of my shots. I worked on the raw file to create the jpg with a slight sharpening of 80/2/2 as the GH4 file are easy to get noise if pushed too much in that department.
With every full shot, there is a crop around the focus area with the camera and lens datas. I will post more later on and a complete collection on the blog part of my website.
I shot a lot fully open even it was not always the best option for the subject I was shooting but I wanted to see what this lens offered at f1.2

I wonder if the 42.5 will work on a BMCC. I know OIS won't but what about aperture ? This looks like a nice lens but I would like to use it both on a GH4 and a BMCC...
nocticron has manual aperture ring as well as electronic
Thank you, that's great news and what about focus ?
Anyone ? Is the lens focus by wire ?
I'd like to share this video about a road trip I've made in December and January. Most of it has been shot with the 42.5mm F/1.2.
@odur - thoroughly enjoyed that! Some nice editing moments too
Thak you. I'm not very expert with editing, but I've tried something more this time.
I really want that lens. Any problems with jitters while using the power ois?
@Odur - the 42.5 looks like a great lens - did you use manual focus much? And how did you find it?
I have never used AF, not even with the 42.5mm. I find the manual focusing very fluid with this lens for now, I can't say the same for other lenses (maybe because they're also older?).
@Odur Did you use any diffusion in front of the lens? Some of the lights look very soft and glowy. Looks great.
@joethepro Thanks!
Do you mean some kind of (physical) filter for diffusion? No, I've not. Just ND filters when needed.
Whatever merits the Panasonic 42.5 has, it’s emotionally hard to get over the price. This lens is the most expensive I own, overtaking the Canon 400/5.6. At least with the Canon 400 you would expect to pay more for a super-telephoto and there are no cheaper options, whilst for the Panasonic 42.5 it’s hard to forget the Olympus 45 exists and is only a sixth of the price.
It’s endless fun to shoot with, and the results are almost effortlessly sharp, contrasty, and beautifully rendered. Perhaps most importantly, the bokeh is wonderful, smooth, and consistent from f/1.2 onward.
