  • New GP3 SOC processor has been developed.
  • MAX2 will launch later this year (with GP3 chip I guess).
  • Old "MAX" will be re-released later in february as a budget 360 option.
  • Unlikely to be a Hero14 with GP3 this year?!

As I suspected last year the Max2 release in 2024 was scrapped due to the outdated GP2 SOC (used in Hero10 to Hero13).

The budget Max will get new life with the updated Quick app which uses AI to auto track selected objects in the 360 deg space.

In reality I guess this also means that the new MAX2 is many months away. I did not sound like that it would be any other new products this year besides the new Max2 and the re-released Max as a budget option. So a Hero14 with the new GP3 processor might be pushed to 2026. Woodman refused to give any specific details on the GP3/Hero14 implementation due to competitors, but the general message was that 2026 would bring several new cameras. BTW: GoPro is not making a profit and a lot has been done to cut cost, including a reduction of the work force. This might slow down development of new products IMO. GoPro was not profitable in 2024 and will not be in 2025 according to the forecast.

Upcoming GoPro releases in 2024 - "ENTRY", Hero13 & MAX2 http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/28050/upcoming-gopro-releases-in-2024-entry-hero13-max2 Tue, 07 May 2024 23:19:36 +0000 EspenB 28050@/talks/discussions GoPro presented their Q1, 2023 earnings call (nothing to write home about - GoPro does not expect to go positive until 2025), but some further product announcements was given:

Due to longer than expected developement times:

  • a new "entry level" camera has been pushed from Q2 to Q3 this year. "Different type of camera."
  • a new 360 camera MAX2 will push to late in Q4.

A new flagship Hero camera (NOTE: Hero 13?) remains on track for a release later this year (NOTE: Usually late sept/early october). "The new Hero will have amazing new features and capabilities."

The current MAX is rather old by todays standards (2019), and have not received a firmware update in 3,5 years (last was december 2020)! Claims was made about the Max2 being competitive in the market when it finally launches.

Questionable waterproof performance with GoPro's (only splashproof?) http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/28107/questionable-waterproof-performance-with-gopros-only-splashproof Sat, 20 Jul 2024 10:15:33 +0000 EspenB 28107@/talks/discussions The Hero5 Black was the first waterproof design of the GoPro cameras, but it was riddled with initial production issues on the waterproof performance. Things might not have improved that much as customers often experiences leaks with the waterproof camera body. Is it perhaps an engineering fault?

Personally I sometimes use them in water parks but would probably never take the camera diving down to 10 meters as advertised.

  • Sony IMX377 sensor (Hero7 Black has IMX277 with HDOL-HDR)
  • Ambarella H2 SOC
  • Lens 145 degree FOV
  • 4K/60

The only thing this adds compared to the Hero7 Black seems to be the front facing selfie screen.

While the Ambarella H2 SOC has 3D based image stabilization it's unlikely to compete fully with GoPro HyperSmooth.

So, if you are less than stoked after being upgraded to the new Quik app this week just to find that the remote settings for "Pro Tune" is nowhere to be found in the app the reason is that GoPro is in litigation with a company which holds two old Contour patens:

"the court agreed with Contour’s claim that GoPro’s remote app infringes on the technology patents and has done so since 2014."

"In December (2020), a jury is scheduled to hear evidence and will decide whether GoPro has willfully infringed on the patents and how much in damages must be paid. So far, liability has not been established; however, if it is, GoPro will be required license the rights from Contour since Contour has valid patents on the technology. Contour will also be allowed to share evidence of GoPro CEO Nick Woodman taking apart and copying Contour action cameras at the trial."

GoPro in 2022: Four new cameras including professional pro level solution http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/26681/gopro-in-2022-four-new-cameras-including-professional-pro-level-solution Sat, 05 Feb 2022 00:03:09 +0000 EspenB 26681@/talks/discussions I used to listen to GoPro's quarterly earnings calls in the past, but have jumped off the wagon in the last year.

However in the recent earnings call Mr Woodman took some time off his yacht to tell us about the 2022 highlights.

I'll just refer to the DC Rainmaker report on YouTube which seems to sum it up nicely (I have not listened to the actual earnings call).

In 2022 GoPro will release a whopping four new models:

  • Pro Level action camera with possibility of a larger sensor
  • smaller FPV compatible form factor, i.e. Session, "DJI Action 2 lookalike" or some sort of "clip on"
  • Hero 11
  • Max2 (or some other named 360 degree camera to replace the soon to be 3 year old Max).

For 2023 this range of new cameras will expand further. All cameras will be iterations built on existing technology.

Also: More cloud based features and a new desktop app is coming this year.

DC rainmaker speculates that we might see some of these new models already for a spring 2022 launch.

Action camera manufacturer GoPro seems to have recovered in the last year, despite the pandemic sales are up like 70 per cent.

Which brings us to the imminent autumn releases of the Hero10 and possible Max2.

So far there is basically no solid rumours floating around, just whishfull thinking. But leaks tend to surface at this time in late august for the usual late september announcement. Production of the new models is underway, this seems to start around june/july at the factories in China/Mexico.

Wishlist:

  • The "gopro" SOC has been around for four cameras now and need an imminent replacement IMO. For better refresh of front screen and overall performance. And lower power consumption.
  • Integrated option for wireless mic (like DJI has in the Pocket2).
  • Lager edge-to-edge back screen.
  • Significantly better stabilisation performance in indoor lighting. Hypersmooth is basically crap even in well lit interiors IMO.
  • Better in low light in general. Pocket2 managed to squize in a slightly larger sensor which seems to boost low light performance. With the larger Hero9 form factor it should be possible to use a slightly larger sensor even in the GoPro.
  • Ditch the media mod and include the HDMI output and analogue input on the core unit. Instead provide a light weight frame with cold shoes.
  • Option of turning of excessive image processing in pro tune mode (i.e. like noise reduction).

The GoPro Hero 10 + the Hohem iSteady Pro 4: Best Stabilization and Quality? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/26511/the-gopro-hero-10-the-hohem-isteady-pro-4-best-stabilization-and-quality Thu, 09 Dec 2021 00:25:36 +0000 markr041 26511@/talks/discussions Used without camera stabilization, the iSteady Pro 4 gimbal does not do a great job of removing jitters, as my night-time video shows (and as seen in other YouTube videos from influencers):

Still better than the Hero 10's stabilization at night (awful, unusable).

But the gimbal in conjunction with the Hero 10's least-cropping stabilization ("Standard"), you get an extraordinary smoothness. So you can produce full-resolution 5K 60P videos that are tripod steady when static and look cinema smooth when moving with the camera, in good light. At least, that is what I discovered.

Here is my test video: static shots followed a by a torture test - 2 minutes continuous walking briskly with the camera on slanted, uneven grass terrains and through leaves and over curbs. Then a sideways, parallel subject following (which I could never do with the camera alone) and finally a follow-subject walk. Shot in 5.3K 60P wide, just like in the night video.

The gimbal is tiny and light, basically you can think of it as a little handle, which I would and do use anyway when shooting handheld with a GoPro. The battery lasts 14 hours, so no worry about that constraint. It is splashproof, so it like the camera can be used in the rain or snow, no constraint there either. It connects (easily) to the GoPro by bluetooth so you start and stop recording with the gimbal button. And, best of all, no balancing, so you will use it. You just hook the camera on (no screw necessary) and go. $79 on Amazon.

Panasonic HC-X1500, HCX2000 and AG-CX10 camcorders http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/23332/panasonic-hc-x1500-hcx2000-and-ag-cx10-camcorders Mon, 06 Jan 2020 14:26:26 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 23332@/talks/discussions image

Panasonic is proud to announce three of the industry's smallest and lightest 4K 60p camcorders. Not limited by their compact and lightweight designs, the HC-X1500, HCX2000 and AG-CX10 offer a high standard of on-site mobility and portability, as well as the high-quality 4K 60p recording capability demanded by professionals. The Wide-Angle 25mm Lens and 32x i.ZOOM (4K recording) achieve high-spec optical performance thanks to Panasonic's exclusive high-precision AF, which also provides high-speed, accurate focusing for both 4K and Full-HD shooting. The new models have a variety of professional functions, such as Two Manual Rings, an ND Filter, a Built-in LED Video Light*3, and 24-bit High Resolution Linear PCM Audio Recording. Users can further customize the recording formats according to the shooting environment or preference.

The new models support 4:2:2 10bit Internal Recording*4 and the new, high-efficiency HEVC codec, and built-in Wi-Fi supports HD Live Streaming without additional equipment.

In addition, the AG-CX10 supports the broadcaster-targeted P2 MXF File Format. Ethernet HD Live Streaming and an NDI|HX*5 compatible IP connection function are equipped, and connectivity is provided for use as a live camera.

Precise Optical Performance

The 4-Drive Lens System controls the lens groups independently. This integrated lens offers a remarkably powerful optical 24x zoom that ranges from 25mm* wide angle to 600mm* tele. i.ZOOM achieves 32x at 4K resolution, and 48x at FHD.

Equipped with a LEICA Dicomar Lens world-renowned for its high standards of lens resolution, contrast, and quality, the camcorders produce stunningly beautiful images while suppressing flaring and ghosts. Two Manual Rings are provided, one for focusing and the other for zoom or iris operation. The Manual Rings are different sizes, so the appropriate ring be accurately identified by touch. ND Filters can be selected from 1/4, 1/16, 1/64, and Clear, while glass is newly used as a countermeasure against scorching from sunlight condensation.

High-speed, High-precision AF Including Face Detection AF/AE

Face Detection AF/AE provides precise focusing and sufficient exposure for subjects, and together with the precise focus lens drive achieves superior focusing speed, stability and tracking performance for both 4K and Full-HD. In addition, subject tracking with color recognition can be activated on the LCD panel.

5-Axis Hybrid O.I.S.

For both UHD and FHD modes, in addition to O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization), Electronic Image Stabilization operates to detect and correct handshake in 5 axes, including rotational blurring. The Ball O.I.S. System reduces friction on the drive section, achieving delicate correction even for small-amplitude handshake. This produces beautiful images with suppressed handshake even at high, 24x optical zoom.

Industry’s Smallest and Lightest Camcorder

A newly developed fan is at the center of Panasonic’s new heat-dispersing design, creating the industry's smallest and lightest camcorder with integrated lens capable of 4K 60p recording. By borrowing air from the rear panel of the camera and efficiently dispersing heat from the front panel, reliable, extended shooting is achieved.

High-Quality, Versatile Recording

The Venus Engine, found in almost all of Panasonic’s LUMIX cameras, is also incorporated in these camcorders. This enabled 4:2:2 10-bit internal recording with maximum 29.97p in UHD, and maximum 59.94p in FHD.

When set for 10-bit recording, the camcorder delivers 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit HDMI output, enabling high image quality capture with an external recorder. New, highly efficient HEVC recording (LongGOP/10-bit 4:2:0/MOV) is also supported for recording 59.94p at a high bit rate of 200 Mbps. As for file formats, in addition to MOV, MP4, and AVCHD, the AG-CX10 also supports the ideal P2 MXF for the editing system for broadcast stations, and recording by the AVC-Intra/AVC-LongG codecs is supported. * AVC-Intra100/50 codec support is planned for the future. Recording by all P2 formats requires a microP2 card.

Super Slow-Motion Recording

FHD mode enables slow-motion recording at 120 fps (for 59.94 Hz)/100 fps (for 50 Hz). 10-bit recording is supported, and full-frame images with the image area uncropped are obtained even at high frame rates. Additionally, auto focus can be used in this mode.

Professional Functionality and Design

  • A bright video light is built into the handle and can be adjusted between 30% to 100% using the dimmer dial. IR lights are supported for IR (Infrared) Shooting for shooting in dark conditions.
  • The 3.5-inch monitor has 2,760K-dots of resolution, making it approximately 2x brighter and having approximately 2x the number of dots compared to a conventional monitor*3. It provides higher legibility even under bright sunlight.
  • An electrostatic touch panel improves the operating ease of selecting menu items.
  • Since the 1,555K-dot tiltable viewfinder and LCD output simultaneously, the image being recorded can also be confirmed in the LCD monitor while viewing it on the EVF.
  • Focus Assist functions including Expand, Peaking and One-push AF are included to support fast, accurate manual focusing.
  • The included battery is unobtrusive when attached and enables approximately 4.5 hours of continual operation.
  • Double SD Card Slot
    • Two SD memory card slots are provided and with unlimited Relay Recording, the device switches automatically and seamlessly from Slot 1 to Slot 2.
    • Simultaneous Recording or Background Recording is also selectable to match the workflow and card necessity.
    • Maximum file size that can be recorded over multiple SD cards is 96 GB. Recording will not stop even when the data size exceeds 96 GB.
  • 48-kHz/24-bit High Resolution Linear PCM Audio Recording
+48V Phantom Power Supply/MIC/LINE Selectable XLR Audio Input with Manual Volume is equipped for each of 2 channels. Also supported is a 24-bit linear PCM system (MOV/P2 MXF*1), 16-bit AAC (MP4), or Dolby Audio system (AVCHD) high-quality 2-channel audio recording. The optional handle unit (VW-HU1) is required for HC-X1500.

Versatile Network Functions

A Wi-Fi module is built-in, so there is no need for a separate wireless LAN module, and Wi-Fi connection is possible without additional equipment. Using a tablet application HC ROP, wireless remote control, including camera settings and lens control, can be set. RTSP/RTP/RTMP/RTMPS-Compatible HD Streaming allows direct connection and streaming over Facebook, YouTube, etc., of concerts, sports events, and news flashes. In addition, the AG-CX10 has an NDI|HX mode, so an external converter is not needed for data transmission and camera control via IP connection.

Other Network Features:

  • 3G-SDI for connecting to an external recorder (AG-CX10, HC-X2000)
  • USB (micro AB) to LAN Conversion Adaptor* Included (AG-CX10)
  • USB micro AB-Host Cable (included) is necessary for the connection.
  • Compatibility with wired remote controls via the remote terminal.

Optional Handle Unit

An optional Handle Unit (VW-HU1) is easily detached and equipped with a 2-channel XLR Audio Input, audio control, and LED light. Operation of the zoom lever attached to the Handle Unit maintains a constant zoom speed, which can be set in 7 steps from the menu.

All three camcorders will be available in late March 2020.

"My research suggests that GoPro is not having a good holiday season. Consequently, I don’t think fourth quarter numbers will be that good. Considering more than a third of this year’s revenues are expected to be generated in the fourth quarter, bad Q4 numbers could send the stock to new lows."

"GoPro’s Bad Holiday 2017 It doesn’t look like GoPro cameras and drones are selling that well this holiday season. While GoPro cameras are the best-selling action camcorders at Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY), it looks like this whole action camera space is shrinking.

Just look at search interest trends for GoPro’s cameras over time. Each new product launches to less fanfare than prior products. The Hero4 had higher search interest than the Hero5, which had higher search interest than the Hero6. This is a bearish trend that only accelerated this year, implying GoPro action cameras aren’t a popular gift item this year."

Here in Norway the biggest consumer electronics retailers have started a price dump on the Hero6 which is now rebated by more than 100 euro.

Official!

YI Technology, the leading, international provider of advanced, intelligent imaging technologies, today announced plans to unveil the YI 4K+ at CES 2017, the first action camera to capture 4K photos and videos at 60 frames per second (fps). The company also plans to fly the YI Erida drone, the world’s fastest tricopter, for the first time live in the U.S.

“2016 has been a whirlwind of product launches including several new action and home security cameras, the YI Erida drone, our first mirrorless camera the YI M1, as well as an exciting partnership with Google to develop a virtual reality camera rig,” said Sean Da, CEO of YI Technology. “CES 2017 is an important milestone for us as we look to demonstrate our full product line and reveal novelty solutions. As a challenger brand in the changing imaging technology market, we are constantly looking for ways to push the boundaries and set new standards for the global industry.”

Based on the award winning YI 4K, the YI 4K+ is the third action camera in YI’s successful line of high quality and affordable solutions. The faster frame rate of 60fps is double that of competitor’s products and allows for more realistic, high quality video content.

YI will demonstrate its full line of connected imaging technology solutions, including the YI Erida drone, YI 4K+ Action Camera, home security cameras, dash camera, and the professional grade mirrorless camera, the YI M1, at two different locations during CES 2017:

Pepcom’s Digital Experience!: Wednesday, January 4, 7pm – 10:30pm PT, The Mirage Hotel The Sands, Tech West: January 5-8, Booth #46324
